Pentagon Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question contained details about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Potential Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Response

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public in the coming days.
