Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
